THE HOLY SPIRIT - OUR BEST AND GREATEST FRIEND. NOT HOW LONG A CHRISTIAN OR A BELIEVER BUT HOW WELL TILL DEATH Noble Child of God, in the story(parable) of Jesus in the Gospel of St.Matthew, "those who were hired at about the eleventh hour(5 pm) came forward and received one denarius each. When the first came(6 am), they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each. They took it, but grumbled at the landowner saying, "The men who came last have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us, though we have done a heavy day's work in all the heat"(Mt.20:9-12(20:1-16). God's thoughts and ways are indeed far apart from that of human beings.(Is.55:8). It may look unfair for the landowner in the parable of Jesus to pay those who worked from 6 am to 6 pm the same wage with those who worked for just an hour, 5 pm to 6 pm. It is very essential to note two details. First, the Landowner gave the first set of laborers the very amount they agreed on, without considering that they worked less than they would have done, since he brought in more hands to join them in doing the same work. So he was not unjust to them. Secondly, those who worked for just an hour were not idlers. They came out earlier to be hired but they were not. They would have gone home dejected and frustrated if not the Mercy, Compassion and Generosity of the Landowner. All those who worked in His Vineyard, regardless of the time they started work went home happy with the same wage. Thus, Jesus used this parable to teach those who believed that they are the first and the chosen people of God, like the Pharisees, Sadducees, Scribes, etc, that the Tax collectors, the prostitutes, the thief on the Cross with Jesus,etc are also gaining eternal life. Therefore, God is always the one who calls people to follow Him or to lead His people. He can use any means to call, through birth into a Christian Family, through friends, Classmates, colleagues, spouse,etc. His interest is in having faithful followers. No matter the seconds, minutes, days or years that one carries his or her crosses after Jesus, the same reward with Eternal life and joy in Heaven await all. Let us not be jealous of anyone nor compare our favours with that of others. God knows us well and loves us. His Grace, Mercy, Compassion and Generous Favours are always very sufficient for all those who love Him and strive to do His will. We have no reason to compete but to persevere in doing Good.
