The Spiritan Home for Divine Appreciation Ministry(SHDAM) is one of the means, The Holy Ghost Congregation, through the Province of Nigeria, South West(SPIRITANS) and their Noble Lay Associates(Silent Preachers or Holy Ghost Missionary Movement), in Benin Zone, live out their charism of identifying with the poor and the marginalized. This initiative began on Wednesday, October, 6th 2021. Moved by that passion of striving to love and appreciate our good God in and out of season, even in his disguised forms (1Thess.5:18;Mt.25:31- 46), the ministry promotes culture and attitudes of giving unconditional appreciation to God by providing Pastoral Care for Children with Special Needs and their Families.
We do the above, by recognizing and appreciating God in Children with utmost Special Needs. We care for them and strive to make them visible and valuable as human beings and true Image and Likeness of God(Gen.1:27). Bearing in mind that knowledge or information is power, we also enlighten and support their Parents, siblings and relations to accommodate, love and care for them better, as they would do to anyone they love.
Thus, the ministry aims at correcting the negative perceptions and narratives that children with Special Needs are Cursed, Bad Luck or Setbacks and should be hidden in the room or taken to a place where the "devil" in them can be bound and cast out. We say no to such negative views and stand out in words and deeds to encourage inclusion, acceptance and proper appreciation of the children with Special Needs and their families.
By the grace of God, The Spiritan Home for Divine Appreciation Ministry is already changing the negative narratives about the Children with her Solidarity with them, Reorientation of the negative views and perceptions about them and the Rehabilitation works of the Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists and the Counsellors of our ministry Clinic, especially our Paediatrician Doctors.
Therefore, we are encouraging all lovers of God and humanity to join us in discouraging and forbidding all sorts of stigmatization against our brothers and Sisters with Special Needs, especially the Children with Special Needs from the womb and their families(Jn.9:1-3; Act.10:9-16).
We cannot over emphasize that Children with Special Needs share the same humanity with us. They breath in and out like us. As such, we strive in words and deeds to support their inclusion in society and advocate for their rights and needs.
Once we identify a child with Special need, we try to put our time and resources where our mouth is by visiting the child with some gift items to meet the parents, siblings and relations to appreciate and encourage them to keep loving and caring for the Evangelist among them. Through our visitation, we know the entire family better and the life stories about them, especially the "Special Gift" of the Family.
By asking after the children, visiting them with some gifts periodically, especially during festivities, like Christmas and Easter, interacting, playing and praying with them, we challenge the relations of the special child not to let outsiders value, love and care for one of their own more than them. In the same vain, we encourage those who see, hear or read about us to change their negative perceptions about the children and possibly join us with their supports.
K nowledge or information, we say is power and Faith we say, comes by hearing the word of God(Rm.10:17). As such, we have First Wednesday of every month as our Reunion, Free Medical Check-up, Health Talks, Testimony, Prayer and socialization day. Often, we invite resource people to come and enlighten us on health issues and our obligations towards God and humanity.
Thus, to achieve proper inclusion, we champion the need for people to forbide stigmatization as individuals, families, communities, states and indeed, as a Nation. We have no right to call what God created in his infinite Love, Wisdom and Image unclean(Gen.1:27; Act.10:9-16). We help to let people see, appreciate and promote the other Divine side of the stories about children with special needs.
To the Glory of God with whom everything is possible, The Spiritan Home for Divine Appreciation Ministry established a Medical Centre for Free Special Medical assessment, Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy sessions for children with Special Needs. It is located at No 1 AMAMIESUN -AMIWA LANE, USELU SHELL, BENIN - CITY, EDO STATE, NIGERIA.
The Clinic opens for service three times in a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. To ease the cost and stress of mobility or transportation, we go to their homes and carry them to our Clinic for medical attentions and take them back. We also provide some Free Medications to the children For better results in their therapies.
We pray and hope for more supporters and resources to establish standard inclusive homes and group of Schools for them. May God continue to encourage you to remain one of our supporters or inspire you to join in supporting us.
